Amarok 2.4.2 Beta 1 "Nightshade" Released

This has been a busy spring and early summer in Amarok-land. Developers met up in Randa, Switzerland and sprinted with a lot of other KDE teams, including KDE Multimedia. Besides lots of good times, much coding progress and bugfixing was done too. You will immediately notice a new streamlined look, and some nice background graphics. The other big change is in dynamic playlists.

One we have been waiting for: drag and drop on Collections, to copy or move within Local Music, and also directly from the Playlist. We also got patches for various bugs and wishes: one can now configure the names of Podcast episodes, thanks to Sandeep Raghuraman, and automatic scrolling in the Lyrics applet is possible, thanks to Jan Gerrit Marker. Good news for classical music listeners, you now have the option to scrobble the composer as artist in, thanks to Nicholas Wilson.
We also have an updated dynamic playlist which should be easier to understand. Some of the functionality changes are: New AlbumPlay example playlist, a Quiz-play bias that will pick a song that starts with the same character the last one ended with, preventing duplicate tracks.
And of course we have quite a few bug-fixes, and changes under the skin. The changelog below gives a fairly complete overview of the changes in this beta release. Please help us test it and get it ready for prime-time.

Join us and rediscover your music!

Nice, I'll give it a try... sadly I doubt it allows to "filter by path" in the playlist.
This was actually the best feature of 1.4... seriously this is what's making me stick to 1.4

Sadly, this is not possible in Amarok 2. You can search the collection using "filename:fubar", which includes not only the file name itself, but also the directories.

Is the 'Crossfading' & 'Gapless' & 'ReplayGain' .... feature out there?
Those are the features most people care, it is a music/audio Player first, then the other fancy features.....
Come on, Amarok ! Please, Amarok !

I for one don't really care about gapless playback or crossfading. Sure let's have it but it's not something I've every really felt a need for. If you think it's so important, might I suggest using another media player and not bother posting on the Amarok release announcements.

Jeremy, don't do this to us. Especially if you're a Amarok developer(I guessed that from git log of Amarok).

Maybe the way i expressed was not candy enough. But i do love Amarok, I used it from version 1.x, i always show it to my friends who use Windows/Mac, i recommand people to give Amarok a try, i would like it to be the best player. I hope Amarok team could listen/hear/accept users suggestion & proposals.

In the mean time i use Clementine, those people listen to it's user, and it works well on Windows/Linux/Mac OS X.
I try a lot to run Amarok on my Mac OS X powered macbook, it is very difficult, and it was very unstable, all kinds of crash, but the homepage of Amarok declare it works on Windows/Mac/Linux ....

All my hope, with crossfading & gapless features and enhance the stability issue, and fix the known bugs, i think Amarok will be the perfect player for us.
I feel a little bit sad as a sincere Amarok user.

Sorry for my english.

I'm not an Amarok developer. Just wanted to make that clear.

One of the reasons we don't have stability on the MacOS is a lack of testers. Please start filing detailed bugs! We can't fix what we don't know about. It would help to have a Mac-using developer as well. Any volunteers?

This is how free software is made and perfected, folks. Interested users who are willing to file bugs, write patches, and even step up to the developer level. Please don't feel sad -- help us out!

I like the content off article.

Try listening to something like the 'Tales of Mystery and Imagination' by the Alan Parsons Project or 'Six Degrees Of Innter Turbulence' by Dream Theater without it, even the slightest pause between tracks is so jarring it almost physically hurts. For fans of progressive music this feature is non-optional.

Gapless playback will be there with the next release of the Phonon GStreamer Backend (see:

ReplayGain has been available for at least a year. You must have your files tagged with replaygain tags, of course. Settings > Set ReplayGain mode.

Sorry for my mistake. Yes, ReplayGain already there. My fault, Sorry.

The good: I like the new Dynamic playlist settings layout :D

The bad: the scripts and the internet services are currently completely broken. So better don't install this amarok version if you rely on them!

Yes, we've just noticed these regressions ourselves. We are currently looking at the source of the problem and fixing it. git bisect to the rescue.

The progress on this issue can be tracked in this bug report:

Internet services have just been fixed a few hours ago:

Even i liked the dynamic playlist setting layout but did not like change of removing of preview button and checkbox from organise collection dialog.

Sadly the screenshot is in Russian (?) and I have no idea what you want to tell us. :-)

You can see that maximal allowed images amount was set as 50 items, but amarok has 185 pictures loaded instead. It happens in case when you change tracks fast. I mean, that when you turn first track to play — amarok start pictures loading for that track and if you will change track before amarok will finish downloading this will cause some pictures widget lags and bugs. Try to experiment with it and you will see it.

Also sometimes it just don't show pictures at all, but you can see that 49 photos was found.

Is there a way to change the awful colour scheme?

Yes, just got the KDE system settings and search for color. There you can change it.
A quick way to get at it from the command line:
kcmshell4 colors

If you find a combination you find prettier, I would not mind a screenshot :)

OMG! The new filter is so awesome! At last I have a hope at playing songs that I want exactly the way that I want. Flexibility is the key! You are on the correct path. Can't wait for stable.

Currently is not possible to create a dynamic playlist that will have only songs that have never been played and songs that were played more than 2 weeks ago. I suppose, the new version will make this possible.

This sounds really great and I think it will go over really well. With the ever-changing technology, it is great to see something come out that seems to be user friendly. I hope to read more soon.
