Thoughts on 1.3 Release

The whole point of this LiveCD is to show off amaroK. I hesitate to add anything that doesn't forward this goal. I also thought it was important to keep it simple. We can add a lot of interesting things that will make it hard to build and maintain.

Just as clarification, non-simple would mean any unionfs or puppy thing where extra tracks can be added to an already burned iso. --Lfranchi 23:10, 5 Jul 2005 (EDT)

Timeline

  • A Final released concurrently with 1.3 final of amaroK, with a couple of beta images released over the next couple of weeks

Marketing

Website with information about amaroK, Magnatune and the tracks, similar to the Wired CD page. I'd like the info to include which dev picked which track We could even let each dev write something about what they picked and why they liked it

(optional, if they wanted to). --Lfranchi 23:10, 5 Jul 2005 (EDT)

Joint marketing with Magnatune - I realize that we can take all the tracks from Magnatune under CC and just use them, but I weant to take advantage of the joint marketing aspects. Arguably one could say that we're giving him more than he is giving us, especially since we can license the tracks under the CC license without his permission. The guy that owns Magnatune was really excited about the possibilities of the joint marketing. He is a fan of open source and sharing music, and although we can do this without him, I think it would have more legs to capitalize on his enthusiasm.

I am strongly for a joint release. I think it would be much better to work together here and do some cross-PR. It would not require too much work, either. I don't know exactly how to do a joint release though. We can of course mention Magnatune as the provider of the tracks, but maybe we could do more. A joint website? We need ideas here. --Lfranchi 23:10, 5 Jul 2005 (EDT)

I had an interesting idea for a video for the joint promotion between the amaroK Project and magnatune. A commercial parodying the old Reese Peanut Butter cup ads where a guy eating chocolate runs int a guy eating peanut butter, and one says, "Hey, you got peanut butter on my chocolate" and the other says, "Hey, you got chocolate in my peanut butter" adn they end by enjoying the new concoction. My story summary for the silly release video

I think this idea is awesome, but its a little complicated. Any ideas, people? --Lfranchi 20:38, 28 Jul 2005 (EDT)

Key Features and Function

  • Boot from USB pen in addition to CD
  • Easy Remaster/add music
  • Show off all the functions of amaroK, wiki, collection, playlists, engines, etc.

ToDo List

  • Graphics (need isolinux splash, bootsplash, kde splash, kde exit, wallpaper)
  • Get music licensed for redistribution (CC license allows mp3 128CBR, I want to license q4 ogg for redistribution)
  • Need promotional website
with full instructions on how to remaster, or else no one will notice. --Lfranchi 12:33, 6 Jul 2005 (EDT)
  • Need to add info to the comment tag of the tracks on who picked
  • Need to build collection for the selected songs (including album art, etc.)
  • Need to make sure there is a wikipedia page either for each artist or a for magnatune or for the livecd
  • Need KDE startup sound

Ideas Left Over from Previous Release

Scripting

Python and PyQt need to be installed for the included scripts, maybe amaroK Desktop Script (which would require PyKDE). If its possible install Ruby, Korundum 3.4-beta2 and my script (Uplisting, both on kde-apps.org under sound) :P Korundum would require compiling it yourself, but despite being part of 3.4 I believe it can be compiled againist KDE 3.3.

Remote Booting

Has anyone given any thought to make the cd remote bootable? I have a large selection of computers at my disposal, but they don't have cdroms. But the majority of them will boot from the network. This would also enable demo'ing the cd at lan parties, trade shows etc. easier by using "dumb" terminals.

Proposed Playlist Order

For now, this is just an alphabetical listing of the Magnatune songs. Tracks from Paniq and Ugress will also be added.

We could also group the songs by genre, so we could just decide to start with (arbitrary choice here) softer stuff, e.g. Guitarscapes or It's an Easy Life and end with Paleo's stuff. That is of course just an example, but it might make more sense to keep things genre grouped than jump around all over the place. --Lfranchi 11:58, 6 Jul 2005 (EDT)
I would agree with this, but we need to start off with a killer track, upbeat, something that most people will like. Also, markey had a great idea to have someone narrate an introduction.--GregMeyer 12:46, 6 Jul 2005 (EDT)
I love the narrative idea, I think that would be incredibly awesome. In terms of the first track, its really hard to choose something that a lot of people like and that is upbeat. Maybe we could vote on this song? --Lfranchi 12:52, 6 Jul 2005 (EDT)
Love the arrative idea as well, if we can't choose a track order there is always RANDOM... pick the first song (narrative one) and let dynamic/party/whatever it is called mode randomly load the rest --Tightcode 22:37, 6 Jul 2005 (UTC+1)

Top Ten Things you can do with amaroK LiveCD

Please add some funny ideas

  1. Place them in MS machines at MS tradeshows to demo what a stable music playing computer should be like.
  2. Mail them to your local government/lobbiest showing that good things can be free, free as in music.
  3. Insert them in cereal boxes at your local supermarket.
  4. Hand them out in front of Vir/gin, FN/AC, HM/V or your favorite music store. (/ included to prevent from citing trademarks)
  5. Hang one from your rear-view mirror with some incantination caligraphied on it.
  6. Drop them in mailboxes in your neighbourhood with FREE AOL printed on them.
  7. Distribute them through the music section of a local bookstore, for example Bor/ders.

If any of the above actions are not legal in your country/commune/prison/county/empire/dictatorship please use common sense and keep out of trouble.
