Amarok 2.4.1 Beta 1 "Ringscape" Released

After a successful 2.4.0 release, we are happy to announce the immediate availability of Amarok 2.4.1 beta 1. This release comes with a lot of incremental changes and bug fixes, but also several new features, including a preview feature for the Organize Collection dialog and integration with the gpodder.net web service. Moreover, Amarok now supports remote NFS and SMB collections.

Please note that this is a beta release, and as such it may have serious bugs. Users are encouraged to test it and provide feedback, to help us make an even better 2.4.1 release.

The changelog below gives a fairly complete overview of the changes since the last release.

Progressive regression of Amarok

Amarok is no longer able to read Audio CDs and has serious problems with several external devices.
The only remaining feature seemed listening to Internet Radios; now it seems that Amarok is not even able to perform that task.

Amarok 2.4.0 does not automatically update the Wikipedia page when changing track.
Amarok 2.4.1 Beta 1 has the same bug and, moreover, is not even able to update the lyrics page; in addition, the script for the Sky.FM radios no longer works.

On KDE4 4.6.2, Amarok 2.4.1 Beta 1 is practically unusable, while Clementine works perfectly.

Progressive regression of Amarok

I for one *love* that this release improves and streamlines amarok even more!

I can't believe you people are always there to pounce on every amarok release. It's sickening.

If you're so obsessed with the same old minor nitpicks like features, being functional, and having a UI that's as good as what we had in 2007 - there's nothing stopping you from trying to get by with banshee or amarok 1.4 or something.

For my part, I will stay loyal to the project - those things don't bother me anyway, since I don't really listen to music (any more) and I like progress.

Go amarok!

@Marc.

Amarok 2.3.x:

CD Audio: works!
Wikipedia page auto update: works!
Lyrics page auto update: works!

Amarok 2.4.0:

CD Audio: does not work!
Wikipedia page auto update: does not work!
Lyrics page auto update: works!

Amarok 2.4.1 Beta:

CD Audio: does not work!
Wikipedia page auto update: does not work!
Lyrics page auto update: does not work!

Perhaps, there is something wrong in the way the Amarok team works.

But play CD'S

Good , lot of things are done , but when will play cds

Playing CDs

I agree. Amarok is wonderful in some things, but IMHO playing audio CDs is a basic feature for an audio player. Besides, tracks are always shown with 0:00 length. The moodbar can be nice (although I don't use it), but in my opinion it is secondary.

However, I have to say I don't know if such behavior is due to Debian package or it is related directly with Amarok. At least, in Debian bugs it is reported.

New "Preview" feature for the Organize Collection dialog.

"Preview" is NOT new feature. It's very old feature. :) In 2.4.1 developers just add "Preview" button and disable autoupdate by default.

Very nice work ! Thanks a lot !

But I wonder if gapless playing, equalizer (for phonon-GStreamer), and visualisations will be implemented someday....

Yes. I am eagerly waiting for

Yes. I am eagerly waiting for gapless and crossfading too. It seems that Phonon devs are not implementing this and amarok devs are blaming phonon devs. There are actually just two features I am still waiting. The second one is enabling advanced filtering of playlists e.g. Green day OR Muse. Patience is a virtue.

Cheers,
Damijan

Agreed. Decent Media Players

Agreed. Decent Media Players *MUST* have gapless/crossfade/equalizer support... Sad to see Amarok isn't amongst them yet...

Thank you for the new

Thank you for the new version. I like that mostly bugs got fixed - Amaroks features are already great, so make it rock stable now. I appreciate your work!

You guys are doing great!

> great 2.4.0 release

Great? You’ve got to be kidding me!

I had to disable automatic checks to collection changes, for Amarok kept checking and checking (and checking…) every minute hogging CPU resources. I can’t find it in the fixed bugs.

I had to remove all applets from Context but Current Track and Lyrics, for I couldn’t do anything during track changes – didn’t respond until it finished fetching all the stuff in the other applets (Wikipedia, Photos, and Similar Artists). I can’t find it in the fixed bugs.

Can’t browse Jamendo collection without Amarok crashing every single time. I had to stop using Jamendo. I can’t find it in the fixed bugs.

I could go on, but I already can’t find those fixes in the fixed bugs. If so, then next version is doomed to be just as “great”.

Maybe the checking bug fixes

Maybe the checking bug fixes itself with the port to KDirWatch (which, by the way, is listed in "Changes").

I don't find anything related to a playlist sorting bug in the list, which I suffer from since I upgraded to 2.4. Yes, I keep my entire collection of about 6000 songs in the playlist and yes, I know that I shouldn't do that, but since it worked fine in all other 2.x releases, I don't really want to change my behaviour.

Amarok is a great player, but the 2.4.0 release definetly has some issues that have to be fixed. I will try 2.4.1 as soon as it is in the Arch Linux stable repos.

Are you kidding? The devs knew about the CPU bug with the 'watch library' options. Some guy (in IRC iirc) had the other bugs too.

Thanks for this new release : it's a good work ! J'adore me livrer des roses par mon mari. Les roses sont des fleurs vraiment fascinantes et ça sent vraiment bon !

The Ubuntu front seems nice at begging but it is not good for me and some other I know. DejaVu font is know to be good quality, for many task (books reading, web..). I also haven't seen a professional review about the Ubuntu font, it is like an young hobby project.

I think the screenshot should have been taken with a more neutral (also distro neutral, you know, some pp can fight about that) font.

Ok ok, I agree whith you :-) Pourquoi tu ne décroches pas ton téléphone pour composer un numéro de téléphone rose. Le tel rose est un bon moyen pour assouvir ses désirs...
