Shun the unbelievers, shuuuun, shuuun!
...candy mountain, Charlie
That's great Nikolaj!
Perhaps you could add the "Stop after playing track", I hate it to clean my playlist or stop within a track for that For me, Amarok2 is a big step forward, and I hope this feature will be in 2.1
"Stop after track" (any track, not just the current one...) is already in trunk and will be in 2.0.1
Wooooow! Just as I saw the last screenshot, the almighty god of excitement made me wet my pants.
This looks really promising, thanks in advance!
I knew you would bring back the old stuff and take it one step further
Great to see such screenshots.
It's actually the new stuff - it just does the old stuff as well
I hope the bashing stops finally. I couldn't here the people saying anymore "Where is the old playlist?" Now they can have it back and everyone will be happy.
But one more feature request now that I see what 2.1 will be capable of: There should be an option to save certain looks. Because to rename tracks with the new playlist isn't that easy. So for renaming music I would prefer the old playlist. But if you just listen to music the new playlist is really great. For a party-mode playlist I could even imagine something different. So it would be great to switch fast between the playlist-styles in order to do that you have to save the different styles.
Always impressive to see the flexibility of those new kde 4 applications.
keep up the good work
I think this is great. I think it would be awesome if you configure were you want you "context view," your "playlist view" and your "collection view" displayed. It would be really nice if i could for instance put the context view all the way on the right side and have the playlist in the middle. Another cool idea would be to make any of the columns hidden at any time. With these additional features and the features you just showed us, Amarok 2 will far surpass the original.
i hope i can stick "context view" on top of "collection view" while leaving everything to the right to the mighty classic "playlist view"
Actually, I'd just prefer it to show the album name when there are multiple consecutive tracks from the same album... otherwise title, artist and track lenght are all I ever really need. I want to manually control the randomosity of my playlist and having multiple tracks from same album is kind of rare, then.
Another big request: Could you make it about million times more apparent which song is currently playing? 1.4's indicator was blissfully gigantic and unambiguous, but 2.0 has... um... something that looks like a list selection (and an actual list selection). Even a little "play" icon would make it clearer! Thanks for the other work, I've really liked 2.0 so far aside of little weird things like this.
One thing about the new code I am showing off here is that there simply is no "now playing" indicator just yet!
I do agree that the one on 2.0.0 could be improved, and we are looking into ways of doing this.
This makes me incredibly happy, I can tell you that! Together with some more advanced bias handling (perhaps I'd need to dive into that a bit more to create the same playlists I had in 1.4, like 'rating Good and better max 400') and the very, very good 'transfer to usb device' configuring, Amarok 2 would be a good replacement for me.
Thanks for listening and implementing these '1.4' possibilities for the playlist.
I'm interested whether you intend to make any cosmetic changes to the controls bar. It fits reasonably well with the Oxygen look but does not obey Qt theming so can end up looking quite out-of-place. Do you see this as an issue?
It is likely that the overall look and feel will change significantly over the next few releases. We know that especially the main controls is a bit of a sticky point.
That looks delicious. Is there an option to hide the context view in settings (GIT (not calling you a git
Thanks, keep up the good work.
Oh, forgot to mention... Don't you think the titlebar name should simply be 'Amarok'? I don't recall the 1.x series having 'Amarok 1' in the titlebar :p
No, but you can use the drag handles to do so, and the this will be remembered next time you start Amarok. As for Amarok 2 vs just Amarok, we decided that Amarok 2 was quite a strong brand in itself and that, at least while bot Amarok 1 and 2 are out there in large numbers, it made sense to make the distinction quite clear.
Congratulations for this new code, and thanks for listening to us who loved the old layout so much.
A config option to disable the plasmarokoid thing (context view?) altogether (and if possible not even loading it to memory) would be fantastic to us old-schoolers, or at least putting it in a tab (or multiple tabs) at the left, occupying the same space where the browsing/services area is, mimicking even more the 1.4 way. I know these sugestions would make Amarok 2 look almost just like 1.4, but it's not my intent. My point is making it just like 1.4 to those who want so (using a wizard to select between the contextual-geared and the spreadsheet-like views in the 1st run would be nice). Happy holidays and keep roking!
I don't mean to be a pain but is there a place I can ask for a feature? I'm loving Amarok 2, I just wish I could transcode my FLAC collection to MP3 when moving things to my MTP device. Next player I get is definitely doing FLAC/OGG!
No worries
Technically, the right way to ask for a feature is to add a wish list item to our bugtracker (http://bugs.kde.org) that way we don't forget it, which can easily happen if we have to keep tracks of wishes posted all over the place As for on the fly transcoding, I seem to remember that there was a script for Amarok 1 to do just that. As the script interface has completely changed (and is 100% non backwards compatible) a new one will likely have to be written for Amarok 2. I don't know if anyone currently has plans to take on this task.
Im actually surprised to see this amarok 1.4 look. After all the interface nazi-ism that happened in the development ("users dont want large playslists", "users shouldnt be able to remove the plasmoid area", "users should love the album icon in every line of playlist"), its great to see some sensible action like that, because users who just liked the large playlist occupying all the screen like in good old 1.X were completely lost. I myself have used all amarok versions until 2.X and I was working hardly to get a replacement for amarok 2.X, with the unbearable new look that seems unuseful for my tastes.
Thanks for hearing, because this (http://amarok.kde.org/blog/uploads/almostoldschool.png) is the way me and lots of others amarok 1.X users wanted their players to be, and we were feeling kinda ejected off from amarok userbase with the 2.X UI radical change. Its not the first time that an interface nazification was tried (I remember during the betas a svn rollback exactly because of that), so please dont try to do that again. The "old school look" is kinda nice, will need to try as soon as I upgrade to kde4 (yep, still in 3.5.X)
"After all the interface nazi-ism that happened in the development"
That is exactly what happens when you stop reading blogs after the first sentence "Its not the first time that an interface nazification was tried (I remember during the betas a svn rollback exactly because of that), so please dont try to do that again." Now, as you may have noticed, we enjoy experimenting with the UI quite a lot, and if this does not happen during the development period (as in, before the final releases), when else would it happen and actually get tested out? So please, try that logic again And yes, of course we listen to our users, anything else would be suicide. We just stop hearing it when the record starts sounding like it's scratched So, in short: Thanks for believing in us!
"After all the interface nazi-ism that happened in the development"
I want to strongly second Dan on this one. There has never been much "interface nazi-ism" during development. The ideas behind the screenshots I posted in this blog have been around ever since Amarok 2 development started. It has always been the plan to make the playlist very configurable. It just took longer than expected to get the underlying code mature enough to start actually building this on top of it. So yes, the playlist in 2.0.0 is quite a bit less flexible than the one in 1.4.x, but as we have told people over and over again, in blogs and elswhere, this does not mean that this playlist will not improve. Far from it. Indeed, I am sure you could say the same about many other parts of Amarok 2.0.0. Many parts might seem much simpler than their 1.4.x counterparts, but mostly this is simply because Amarok 2 is a very young application and development on the 2.x branch has just started. So really, your accusation of us being "interface nazi" is misplaced at best and shows a profound lack of understanding of the development process, despite our very best efforts to make it as transparent as possible what was going on.
Hi
Well, I tried to follow the amarok blog and news about it, but I was saying that based in 2 things: i) All the versions after 1.5 that I have used from amarok I could never get it configured the way it is shown in the screenshot. ii) Lots of people who liked the previous look-n-feel complained about the new interface of 2.X to me, and I can say that there was a collective feeling that if we wanted big playlists and no plasmoids we would need to go find another player. This could be just a communication issue, then, or my sample of amarok users wasnt exactly fair (it was almost all 1.X look fans) I remember complaining in this very blog about the playlist and sometimes there were evasive answers, sometimes we would see just "oh, you dont need big playlists period" attitude. Even in the amarok irc channel I saw that "the interface will be like that and if you dont like it, go find another player" (which was actually what I went to do). But as Ive said, maybe it was a communication problems, instead of philosophy problem. Maybe "interface nazi" is the result of the frustration of trying version after version of amarok and not seeing a "classical playlist" the way I like it, only the new playlist for few songs, and empty space in the middle, because I dont feel like adding anything to the plasmoid area. Another thing to notice is how lots of people came here comment in this posts praising how they are able to use the "old look", which proves lots of people really enjoyed it, and were lost seeing lots of betas of amarok without it. Anyways, great to see it, think I will probably continue using amarok now that I saw the light again.
Did you have a look at KMail's implementation of the email list? I think it's quite nice and a lot of it could be ported to Amarok. They have a nice GUI to configure it.
That "old school" look is promising that Amarok 2.x series is actually going to provide a usable music player. I'm one of those who need effective (1) player, (2) current playlist and (3) music collection. Amarok 1.4 (which I'm using now) is nearly perfect for that.
Other features I pretty much never use. I absolutely never use "Context" view nor any of that album cover art, lyrics or music-rating stuff. I really hope that future Amarok releases will allow user to configure away all the new multimedia crap that might be visible by default.
Please, God, let this functionality work its way into the Windows build before 2010. Please.
Hey, that looks what I am waiting for to switch to amarok 2.0 instead of 1.4.
What I really need are those additional informations in the playlist and the possibility to SORT each. |
