Sunday, November 20. 2005ifp - it's in!
I would like to present the latest feature available in the development version of amaroK - iRiver ifp support in the media browser (image). Transfer your favourite tracks to your device without the hassle of finding out where they are and how to transfer them! You will need to have an ifp device in Manager mode (not UMS), and you are well on your way to rocking out on the street!
In other news, we have a revamped Tag Dialog, which shows, amongst other things - lyrics (which are editable), as well as support for external sqlite versions higher than 3.2.4. Trackbacks

Recent iRiver players are no longer supporting Linux at all. They are using a new Microsoft proprietary format based on PTP, called MTP. Which interfaces directly with Windows Media Player 10.
The USB device isn't recognized at all. Microsoft's license for MTP is incompatible with open source entirely. Clearly trying to shut out Linux from portable media. More info: http://seclists.org/lists/linux-kernel/2005/Oct/1304.html
Here is part of that Microsoft license.... ridiculous as it is....

Is in amaroK iAudio support, becouse I want to buy it and just don't know...
iAudio like from the cowon guys?
I have a M3 and you don't need anything but usbstorage in the kernel.. just copy your mp3 files to the device after mounting it.
This decision was the uncleverest of all that iRiver ever made IMHO. Not all people use winblows, and not all people who use winblows use WMP.
Will there be easy handling of UMS devices as well (like USB sticks with integrated mp3 players)? That would be great!
thank you very much. i'd also beg for the option to on-the-fly downsize (re-convert) the music uploaded to ifp device. mine is only 128 mb (780T)
Excuse me for the ignorance, I just don't know other players than my usb-flash disk one..
Why do we need support for each player seperately? Isn't the player just a disk with files in it? Why not use it like one?
Some players (like iPod) aren't treated as external USB mass storage devices. So, support for them should be included separately.
How about support for Creative Nomad flash players? There exists source code for reading and writing to these players in Linux (command line). I guess it'd be difficult to test for a developer who doesn't have one of these devices, though. See my comment in the wiki for more details:

Well, I have Creative Zen Touch player (it perfectly works with libnjb) and I want support of this player in amaroK. I can offer help with testing code with this device. //sorry for my english...
I have just bought a zen touch today, knowing gnomad supports it, but I would love support in the best music player i've ever used. Thanks a lot to the Amarok guys, we can't expect the world, but its obvious you want to give it to us
I've compiled amarok from cvs as of today to check the iFP support. I installed libifp (I was using my 599T as a UMS until I decided to try the non UMS firmware to check the speed difference: it is awesome).
Libifp (ifpline) seems to work well, I even compiled and used ifpgui which also uses Qt 3 and it does work well. Amarok, OTOH, doesn't see my player when it's actually connected. While compiling, ifp.h was reported as non usable, although present, and the ifp plugin is compiled and installed. The first time I launched the new amarok (new vs my former 1.3.7 copy), it asked my about a removable device it had found which was labeled 'Floppy drive'. Beyond that, it didn't give me any chance to use my iFP. If I open the Devices page, it says no devices is selected, but there are no items to choose from either. Any clue?
I'm glad you are happy with it
There is work going into automagically detecting connected devices, don't worry! ifp.h is reported non-usable, due to a problem in the ifp.h file. It is strange, but has no effect. Also, there has been crazy work going on for auto detection like i said, so it may not have been working when you tried
Sure I'm happy with it
Amarok absolutely rocks. I've been following closely its development, and your work rate is huge. I'm willing to say that after konqueror and konsole, it's probably the kde app I use the most. Moreover, I know I haven't checked many of its features... The only thing I miss, which is well recognized as so even by you the amarok devs, is better visualization, spcecially full-screen. Anyway, back to the ifp support. This is a feature I hadn't expected at all. I'm still curious to see it working myself. Is there anyway I can do do a 'manual' detection? Maybe I should compile amarok wih debug symbols, but still, what do I need to see debugging output while running amarok? In contrast with many other kde apps, it doesn't spit any errors when run from command line... Otherwise, just keep working on it as you're doing and I'll try to be patient Oh and Happy New Year!!

You should try projectM - a very cool visualization. See http://amarok.kde.org/amarokwiki/index.php/ProjectM_HowTo
With regards to visualisations, have you tried libvisual with projectM yet? Its really quite good!
Also a cheat to get fullscreen visualisations (although it doesn't work so well with the non-GL ones) is to right-click on the visualisation on the task bar and then select Advanced -> Fullscreen. |
