Hmm... $11,557 isn't much for a year when thinking business
You probably (actually I'd be very astonished if its not so) cost him way more in the year. Even when you cut your payroll by 50%. Okay... its also marketing. I guess a lot a of the people just heard of Magnatune because of your work. At least thats true for me
No, in terms of pure profit, it is not really profitable in any way yet, but considering that Amarok so far is only available on *nix which still has a relatively small market share, I think it is quite good.
And this is something to build on. If you read Johns blog entry, Magnatune is working with other free software projects as well, so in the long term, we are hoping for a "long tail" effect where each app maybe only sells a bit, but put together it becomes quite significant. And my own personal hope is that Amarok makes a huge entry on Mac and Windows which will, I hope, bring a host of new customers to Magnatune.
Personally I need to use paypal to get around foreign country credit card fees and amarok does not support that, so my purchases are not counting towards the sum. I guess that quite a few people from outside the US might have this problem so the mentioned sum is likely to be a lower bound.
We are aware of this, but unfortunately, we have not found a way to implement paypal purchasing in Amarok, as paypal requires that you log in to their site to verify the payment.
In the next version of Amarok, you will be able to use the new Magnatune memberships ( which you pay on their site, and can use paypal for ), so there is hope for paypal users!
The fact you have a deal and are earning money from it is very good news! You really should publicise more that you can support amarok by buying DRM free music through amarok/magnatunes. I would have bought some of my music through this if I had known. I don't think it would be out of place to mention this on at the top of your amarok homepage, on the welcome screen to amarok and on the magnatune tab. Obviously, amarok shouldn't become nagware, but I think you're treating this far too secretly!
It was never meant to be a secret, but we might not have been good enough at advertising it. It is definitely something we have taken under consideration and we might make a bit more noise about it soonish!
ja. be more aggressive in marketing these second-degree amarok support possiblities.
Wow, great news!
To celebrate it I purchased my first album through Amarok on Magnatune. The interface is very well done and very easy! And now I can enjoy Beth Quist's Lucidity in Flac format for $10 (you can choose to pay less or more if you want, the default is $8) that will go $5 to Beth, $4 to Magnatune and $1 to Amarok. Nice! I have to keep buying to make my Amarok contribution get at least to $20!
Cool and thank you!
I hope you will find lots of great music that you like! I really like Beth Quist's "Silver" album! |
