I have the same thing, except I'm caught between a rock and a hard place (I have same chipset you upgraded to); on Ubuntu 8.04 Beta the latest NVidia drivers introduce a serious regression where any Metacity decorations are seriously degraded. Upgrading to the beta driving from NVidia fixes that problem, but now X is using something like 35% of my CPU. Stuff like large pages in Firefox don't scroll smoothly, and games won't go to fullscreen automatically despite being set to do so.
You tell me what to do
One thing to do that I read was to un-check "sync to vblank" under "x server xvideo settings" in the NVIDIA x server settings.
I hadn't seen that; I'm going to give it a shot... can't hurt, right?
Make sure you're actually using the nvidia drivers.
$ glxinfo | grep vendor server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
export __GL_YIELD="NOTHING"
try this. cpu usage of my xserver has dropped dramatically and everything is working very well now |
