I remember some of the earlier Gentoo install CD's (actually the current 2007.0) use gnome and have a count down at GDM before logging in, which you can cancel.

try grml.org. This is a tiny live-cd based on debian for people who love console tools. It also features some windowmanagers like fluxbox. Easy to use and small + powerful. Hope that fits your requirements. Best wishes. |
