Sunday, January 20. 2008Last.fm support in Amarok 2
A bit of a change from me today ... I'm not going to mention Windows. Well, unless you want to get really meta and count the last line ...
I think last.fm support has always been one of the cool features of Amarok, and as has been mentioned here before, with the services framework of Amarok 2 I'm taking the opportunity to revamp it a bit. So far I don't have anything really graphically impressive to show for it, but under the covers the old code has been completely ripped out, and replaced with a new codebase, which uses code from the official client to do the heavy lifting. Kudos of course to the last.fm guys for making their client available under the GPL! What this means for users is that since the scrobbling of tracks and playing of the radio are now using the same protocol (and even largely the same implementation of the protocol) as the official client, breakage should be a much less common thing. I hope to get working on the interface to last.fm in the services panel in the near future, but until then you can just paste last.fm URLs in the "Add Stream" dialog like any other streaming source. My web browser already integrates an Amazon store.
I'm not sure if the Amazon store has an open API for third party clients, but if they do, and someone who actually uses the store is interested in implementing it, it could be done.
Since I don't use the store, I wont be doing the work though.
If it integrates it .It would be a great competitor to the itunes store
If Amazon want to fight a war with Apple, and they want Amarok to help them do it, then they can use some of their billions to pay someone to implement it. Or, as I said above, maybe someone cares enough to implement it in their spare time.
Either way, it has nothing to do with last.fm, so I don't know why it's on this topic.
Well,
$ last.fm-ripper --help last.fm-ripper - 1.2 (c) Copyright 2006 - Jochen Schneider - usage: last.fm-ripper -u [-p ] [-d] -[c] [-o ] [-a ] [...] -w, --aws_token amazon webservices developer token for advanced tagging (http://amazon.com/soap) I think the last.fm client also gets the CD images from Amazon. So that might be the connection
Obviously we want to work with the last.fm guys not piss them off, so we can't offer anything that's going to violate their licensing agreements for content, like offering rippers.

Mail me about how the integration went and what we can do to improve collaboration.
Everything I've been reading about Amarok 2.0 seems really exciting. To me, it's already a pretty good player, but with all these new features (Plasma integration, Jamendo, Last.fm, Ampache, Magnatune, Central Context Browser, CoverBling, Phonon integration, SVG support, etc.)
2.0's going to be really amazing, I can't wait. And AmazonMP3 would make a lovely addition, I think. I wouldn't use it, since I don't have a credit card (and I dunno whether they support PayPal)
Ooooh.
Aaaah. Does the incorporation of official last.fm code mean at some point the option to use audio thumb prints when scrobbling will be included? Hopefully sooner rather than later? Later, Seeker
I hope to get that support included at some point, although I haven't taken a look at what need to be done to make it happen yet. First priority was to get basic scrobbling and the radio working.
Figured there would be other stuff of higher priority, but nice to know it's on the radar.
It would be nice too if thumbprints were used more in other places within Amarok. Random playlist generation could benefit from it. In particular with extreme cases like the Beatles where you may, through various releases, collections, soundtracks, etc..., potentially end up with several copies of a song but out of 6 copies maybe only actually have 2 or 3 different versions. With the news/announcement, what is the future of Amarok's Last.FM support? Will we get the annoying notices that 'its time to subscribe' or anything? (Also, in searching for last.fm in the Blog's search box, it came up with no results. I just happened to click a recent date to see this post.)
The server side controls the playlist generation, so if after playing the track 3 times you get a subscription notice from the server, Amarok will obviously have to inform you that it can't play that track. It'd just be a status bar message, not a popup or anything obnoxious. The way the last.fm support works, each station url is just a playlist entry, so if one runs out of content or can't be played we automatically move on to the next one.
As far as advising the user that they can subscribe to allow them to play the track more times, I think that's something we'd probably want to do. Other services are commercial ventures that aim to sell music, so I don't think last.fm is any different. And of course we'd continue to offer whatever free content last.fm lets us. As for the blog searching, no idea on how it works, but I can't find this post by searching for last.fm either. :/ |
