I know this is kind of pointless without sound engines, but how about binaries for those of us too lazy to compile?
Binaries will be done at some point. Once Amarok is somewhat stable and useful it should be available via the KDE windows installer:
http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/KDE_on_Windows/Installation At the moment I really don't want to deal with binary packages as I have enough broken things I need to fix without more bug reports. Besides, both Amarok and KDE are changing rapidly enough at the moment that any binary package will contain a bunch of already fixed bugs.
Hi all. I'd be interested in working on this project. I'm a pretty skilled programmer, and have worked on Linux and Windows.
Does anyone know where things are going as far as doing a VLC backend for Amarok?
This looks nothing short of AWESOME.
Can't wait to use it, though I'm really waiting for when KDE4 has the official release, is integrated into Kubuntu 8.04 LTS (Or Kubuntu Studio 8.04 LTS). In any case, media capabilities are going to ROCK even more on my PC.
Greetings !
I'm trying to gather information about what kind of decoders can be used to render MP3 files. All I found was a reference to the xine-lib and helix, but I'd really prefer to use the MAD-lib instead for its excellent sound quality with replaygain in 24bit piped via SPDIF into my 5.1 Denon AVR1802 ... Considering xine-lib and helix were named in a Linux environment, what are the plans for your Win32 port ? Ideally, you could provided some sort of Winamp plugin adapter (input, output, DSP, visualization etc.), to instantly gain tremendous attraction for a lot of Winblows users However, it would be nice to get some sort of feedback for my request ... Until then, keep up the good work ! Best regards, Maggi
Amarok will be using phonon on all platforms. Currently on unix that means using xine for output, although there are plans for other decoders (such as gstreamer) in future KDE releases I believe.
Windows decoders will probably be whatever phonon back end trolltech provides with qt 4.4. Likely something based on DirectShow, since that's standard on all windows installs. I certainly have no plans on supporting winamp plugins, as I don't really see the point.
Thanx a lot for your feedback, Shakes.

Likely something >based on DirectShow, since that's >standard on all windows installs. so in my case, the only chance I see is that there will be an appropriate DirectShow filter that'll suit my decoding needs >I certainly have no plans on supporting >winamp plugins, as I don't really see >the point. I understand that you don't have any plans to develop a Winamp plugin interface or adapter, it was just an idea how Amarok could greatly benefit from existing plugins. The reason why I posted in first place was that a friend of mine is using Amarok 24/7, but I noticed the ReplayGain support was not working as I expected, since it seemed to me the decoder was applying the replaygain values while decoding, but after a second or two, the volume slider went down as well, as if replaygain was applied a second time, but on the output. Hence I saw two problems, the additional volume reduction on the output slider and the delay before it got applied. Maybe it was just a configuration issue. Cheers, Maggi
Wikipedia's information is more like a wish list than reality - xine is the only backend currently available.
Although as my blog post describes, amarok now has a DirectShow backend for phonon that works well enough to play local files: http://amarok.kde.org/blog/archives/536-Amarok-2-now-with-100-more-audio-playing-on-Windows.html As I understand it, replaygain is currently implemented with an external script, which isn't really ideal, for the reasons you list. I'm not sure if anyone has any plans to implement it in a better way. The best chance is probably something happening on the phonon end.
Awesome, guys. I'm so excited, the end of iTunes and Winamp (at least on my machine) is near.
I'm really looking forward to it.
I just have one question. Will it be portable or it will need installation? It is important for me, cuz our work machines have limited user rights. PS: Is it just a coincidence that it has the same name as Mike Oldfield's album from 1990?
It'll be as portable as any other KDE 4 application, meaning that if you're content with carrying around a 200 meg library archive for it, sure, it'll run
As for the name... Are you really that new? No, it is not a coincidence giggles Check the FAQ, you're not the first to ask
Debug build under MSVC:
du -s bin 149129 bin Compile a release build and remove the unneeded parts of KDE and you could probably get it down under 100MB.
Problem is, that I'm more interested in the win version which I could install and run on work XP's without admin rights. Portable apps do the job well.
Oh and I am very new here, but next time I promise I will check out FAQ first
I haven't tested it, but I think it should be possible to run without admin rights. "xcopy" style deployment should in theory be possible (it's just when you say "portable" people tend to think small, which it wont be).
Great! Thanks. That's enough for me
