Sunday, September 16. 2007iPod Classic Will Be SupportedAs recently reported on Slashdot, Apple, in its infinite wisdom, has added a checksum to the iPod database apparently to restrict non-iTunes products (like Amarok via libgpod) from having the ability to add music. To me this sounds pretty familiar. This is the same thing they did to iTunes 4.5 to make it harder for other apps to read off their DAAP shares, they changed it again in iTunes 7; open source apps are still unable to read iTunes 7 DAAP shares. But there's better news on this iPod front. From #gtkpod today: <wtbw> okay guys <wtbw> i think we're done. <wtbw> let me code something just to check [30 minutes later] <wtbw> can i hear a fuck yeah? <wtbw> works for both mine and xamphears :> wtbw suggested donations from thankful users go to Cancer Research UK. Really the only "correct" solution is for folks to stop using Apple products. The iPod might have its own version of DAAP's iTunes 7 which has a checksum more difficult (apparently) to crack. But for the time being, things are fine. Trackbacks

Well, I've always thought that buying something from apple, microsoft or sony is equal to donating to the DRM supporters. Moreover, apple products plain suck: for the price of 1 Gb iPod I can buy a 4 Gb player (which supports OGG and has no DRM, unlike iPod), and MacBooks are twice as expensive as other brand notebooks with exactly the same configuration. And iPhone? Basicly crap, with severe security issues. Unfortunately, there are plenty of iSlaves and iDiots who'll buy anything apple produces...
No, he isn't correct. Its Ogg Vorbis.
It's it's, not its.
And the vicious cycle continues.
No, you mean viscous cycle.
Best thread evar.
It's ever, nott evar.
It's knot nott, it snot.
It's not "it snot" it's "it's not".
What's not there, Mr. Snot?
It's "Dr. Snot", not "Mr. Snot".
Let us see how far this can nest.
EVAAAAAARR!
knot snot?
it's not not nott.
It ins't nott not not, it's not
It's not snot, it's not knott, and it's not nott. And (obviously) it's "evah" with a distinctive london lilt to the pronounciation of the "ah". Evahhhh.
Ur doin it rong
You think you're funny, but you're snot.
Wow. That's all I have to say about this thread...and it isn't to be taken as a form of flattery.
Its = It is. It's = It has.
Wrong. You have that backwards. "It's" is a contraction for "It is". "Its" is the possesive form for the third person singular.
Its snot "possesive;" it's "possessive" not is "it's," you cad.
Actually, more like sideways. "It's" is a contraction for "it is" and also "it has". Neither of the examples were possessive.
it isn't It ins't nott not not, it's not, it's It isn't nott not not, it's not
glad to see the internet it's being put to good use.
OH god I can see forever!!!!!
I can see my house from here
And its on fire!!!
to bad.

A festival of miscommunication and error , that. For one thing, while the Shuffle supports a particular kind of DRM, it does not require it in the slightest. For another, no, you can't get an identically-equipped laptop for half the price from any reputable manufacturer - depending on the specs, the MacBook can be anywhere between $400 cheaper to $300 more expensive, based on the last time I looked (comparing to brand names, not the Fly-By-Night Laptop Company(tm)) And for another - er ... what security issues are you talking about? Besides the fact that the iPhone's operating system runs as root ... which may be a problem if you hack it to run third-party software and don't check your checksums ... I haven't seen any mentioned.
No, what I think we have here is someone who's caught in the "if it's popular, I can't like it, because then I won't stand out from the crowd" trap.
You are on crack if you think Macbooks are that overpriced. They might be $50-100 more, but definitely not double.
Look at the specs of the MacBook and compare it to the PC world; for the same price of a Macbook high end, I can get a superior laptop with higher specifications than the MacBook; heck, this laptop I'm using right now was NZ$400 cheaper than the top MacBook and out performs it.
Side note: I don't run Windows btw.
Yeah but NZ$400 is what...like $2.25US?
You sir, are a dick. I can buy four THOUSAND hot dogs in New Zealand for the price of one of your 'NEW YORK STYLE' hamburgers.
Right, the American dollar has been in free fall for several months and we get this kind of nonsense. The CDN dollar is minutes away from being at par with the US greenback. Suck for me, btw, because I get paid in US dollars.
Your opinion seems to be based, in part, on false premises and an obvious lack of first hand experience. It's fine to have a preference, but if you are going to criticize something you should at least use current and valid arguments.
1) The iPod may not support all formats, but not all formats that it supports have DRM. 2) Price disparities between Apple computers and similarly configured PC vendors has been mentioned often over the years, but the current arrangement has been debunked thoroughly and it is roughly equal (if not slightly cheaper if you take into account software or a lot cheaper if you take into account TCO). 3) I'm not sure what "basically crap" means or what it is based upon, but - for those who actually own it - a survey showed amazing levels of satisfaction (see http://yahoo.usatoday.com/tech/wireless/phones/2007-07-12-iphone_N.htm). I normally don't bother with responded to ignorant trolls like yourself, but it was a commercial break and your writing style struck a nerve. Oh yeah, your comment really had no value in the context of this post - FYI.
I don't mind paying extra for something I will enjoy more.
Great work of the gtkpod team!!
It's GB not Gb - you don't know your bits from your bytes.

Unquote While I respect your views about Apple products, I would suggest that you check your facts about the cost differentials between similarly speced Windows and Apple laptops. For example, a Dell or HP similarly speced laptop is actually slightly more expensive than a MacBook. On top of the purchase costs of the hardware, add the cost of the software that you have either already bought or have to buy and the cost of the Windows laptop soars. The Mac comes preloaded with a substantail array of software that is absolutely free and included with the cost of the hardware.
Seems to me that there is a deep seated insecurity in your posting. Maybe a trip to a qualified psychiatrist might help you to get a more balanced view of the world.
Well, you just enjoy your Microsoft tax on your fancy non-Apple laptop, bub. Good luck keeping your wallet out of DRM's hands, because the place you buy your fancy awsum laptop from also makes money selling Vista and XP. Are you going to pay them in GPL dollars?
I agree with the post above. I bought a compaq a year ago with more features then the super high end MacBookPro and it was still about 300 less then the cheapest MacBook. I've had my iPod for almost 4 years. Its a Gen 3 with 15 gig, and i do love it to death. I have probably used that one device more then any electronic device i have ever had in my life. But with every update of iTunes Apple continues to crap up there product. Adding more and more features i don't need. Automatically filing podcasts in a totally different directory then the rest of your library. And even worse getting rid of a feature that allows you to tell you how much space you have left.
I switched over to Ubuntu about a year ago and discovered Amarok shortly after it. I think its a great jukebox with a few problems but overall very good. With the anouncement of the 160 gig iPod Classics i thought it maybe time to upgrade. So I'm glad that i can now use it in Amarok. Keep up the good work.
so your telling me your Compaq was $749 (cheapest MacBook $1049 - $300) and is faster then the "fastest" MacBook Pro (2.4ghz Core2Duo, 4mb L2), GeForce 8600 256mb, 2048mb memory (upgradeable to 4096mb) which has a retail price of $2499 (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=MacBookPro)?
Gimme the model name of the Compaq, I'm gonna buy 4 of 'em, if it were to exist...
Until people stop buying their shit they will shove this DRM crap down our throats. Boycot people, boycot. Samsung and a few others have some nice alternatives.
The best one I've seen so far is the new Sansa 16gig model. I'm probably going to wait till the speed of flash improves along with reliability issues before I move off my MiniDisc player.
mini disk player!!??? ha! u have got 2 b kiddin me.
i would rather use a pair of headphones plugged into a turd than use a minidisk player. ANYTHING on teh market is better than a minidisk "playa"
Quote: ANYTHING on teh market is better than a minidisk "playa"
Obviously you haven't owned a Zune.
Four years ago I used to rock a minidisc player, then sony NetMD, and my iPod is better by far if only for the fact of third party support. I can use a number of programs to rip content off my ipod which I still don't think netmd has managed to do. (maybe i'm wrong though).
The MD could record portably, and a LOT better than ipod line-in solutions, but I never really used that feature (since I can't copy the track to my PC anyways!) The NetMD software was loaded with DRM and buggy as hell!, but at that time flash was still over $1/MB. MD quality was a bit better than 128k mp3, and media was cheap, but slow record times and horrible software you're required to use ruined it for me. I switched to an ipod and would never switch back (although for the time MD also had an edge on compactness and battery life but 4 years later ipod has the compactness... still kinda working on the battery life, maybe the new flash ipods... Some MD players get 40+ hours on ONE AA battery. MD had it's time and place but hard drive mp3 players are just plain better. the ipod has been a good solution for me. DRM isn't being forced down our throats with ipods either, It just supports it. If you can find an online music store that gives you $1 legal unsecured mp3 downloads then let me know! I don't use ITMS, but as a legal download service I'd say it's a much better experience than napster, rhapsody, or similar legal alternatives. not quite as nice as bittorrent though, which my ipod supports great as long as it's not some weird lossless format. MP3 support is all I need. wanna go lossless, it supports WAV too!
Just a minor issue: files without drm are not 'unsecured', they're just drm-free. I hate the media calling these files 'unprotected' as these files are 'protected' by copyright regardless of there drm. And drm does not make they 'secure'.
"...And drm does not make them 'secure'."
No, but it guarantees some company a 'secure' income.
Sony got rid of 'protection' in SonicStage 4.3 - stop living in the dark ages, things have changed.
I've had the benefit of owning both a MD player/recorder and an iPod and both have their advantages. The iPod wins in terms of sheer capacity but in terms of sound quality, I believe the MD player just sounds better. IMO. if you take song ripped using Sony's ATRAC3 Codec it has a musical clarity that exceeds the iPod. I also like the inline controls of the minidisc player. You can simply keep the device in your pocket and not have to thumb around for it any time you want to fast forward or stop.
Regardless, my MD player now resides in the top drawer of my dresser along with a handful of minidiscs only because of the ability of the iPod to provide me with a greater variety of music withut carrying around a handful of minidiscs.
Mate; stop living 10 years ago; I have the latest MiniDisc MZ-RH1 which supports ATRAC3pro - it is far superior at low bit rates than mp3 or aac.
Oh, and as for comparison with iPod; I had my iPod repaired 4 times in a space of 6 months - sorry, I don't fragile crap, I want rugged stuff that I can use without crapping myself in fear of something going wrong.
Please let us know about the availability of your iTurd.
iTurd has to be formatted with iWipe after every use.
My iTurd got infected with the iCorn virus
That's odd...these iTurds have been getting all sorts of problems lately. Mine recently turned into an iRiver
Sorry, is iRiver some special slang term for iArrhoea?
http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/
/End of discussion.
First I thought it was some sort of bovine website. But yea, looking at their products, a portable 4in movie display that plays XviD and such? That would be pretty awesome.
But I have like $0 that isn't someone elses at the moment, so it will have to wait.
I would have gotten one of those two years ago when it first came out. Now, however, with 160gb ipods for $350 that totally blow those away, I'm going for the iPod. It's only a matter of time before a new Rockbox comes out and it supports all the formats anyway.
(Rockbox ftw)
Oh, and right now I'm using an iRiver H320. I'm constantly out of disk space, and it's as thick as a friggen brick. It has rockbox on it for the no-gap-between-tracks, but yeah, I really want one of those classics
i have a iriver h340 since 3 years. but the battery only works for max 6 hours nowadays, and 40 gb is not enough. so i bought the 160 gb ipod classic. and i really like the 160 gb space, the good battery life, and the small player. but otherwise my h340 with rockbox is sooo much better! (been thinking about buying a 80 gb hd and a new battery. but i'm not sure i could change the parts and keep it alive ^^)
No it isn't a matter of time. The hardware on these new iPods are really poorly documented. Same with the 2G Nano, it's been out a long time and there's still no Rockbox for it. Go to the #rockbox irc channel and have a chat with the developers and you'll understand.
Even I thought it was COW ON AMERICA at first. --;
COWON does have good products with good sound quality. (They used to make a software called ZetAudio.)
Freaking awesome. I have to say, the 2 things I loved about my ipod before it was stolen was 1) it was awesome pink and 2) it was so little....so FREAKING little. How can you get much smaller? So cute. Not room for screen except maybe on other side or make it touch. Still BUGGY as hell and ya if Apple is going out of way, may be best to put what I loved about it in past. Still god damn heh. So cute, so little, so light, so pink. That thing lied so much, it only told last.fm what IT felt I liked. Ah a good memory. I really miss her
Your words had more weight if you stopped supporting their products instead of gloating that you now do.
Can anyone suggest a good alternative to the ipod that can be used on OSX? Every time I bloody ask anyone they say "why do you want to use anything but an ipod when you've got a mac?"
The answer: I box, I climb (fingers crossed to Everest soon), I run, I train, ipods (from what I've heard) cannot keep up. Suggestions?
I use the Sandisk Sansa e250. I boulder, bike (mtb and road), run, etc with it. Get a holder for it like the dlo action jacket and you shouldn't have problems, as the plastic on the face is a bit fragile on its own. I run Rockbox on mine.
I assume that you are a Windows user. Your comment and your user ID reveal the low intelligence and IQ levels that you have. That is nothing to be proud of, I can assure you.
You all are out of control!
How long will it take until Apple does an update? And what will it still work then?
iPods are the best choice for both the worlds. they support both protected & DRM free formats.
They gotta keep the music industry happy too
uhhh I don;t have a problem using DRM free music on my iPod.... I don't see wwhat the big deal is
wow, the varying amounts of stupidity and boarderline intelligence brought together on this blog are strangly addictive i read the whole blog. Hoever having reached its end i feel ashamed of myself. like the little boy who hasa soiled himself i realize that i have just been subject to the most bizzare amount of shit in my day so far. Even though i may sound dissatisfied i say thank you. you have spent 5 hours of my day and i am that much closer to sleeping.
yup macbooks suck ass. I have an acer that costed me $699 USD and I have 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, and Intel Centrino Duo. Your $1,000 macbook doesn't have shit.
Can I ask a serious question? There are those of us who have already got an iPod Classic and who want to use it with AmaroK, but can't.
Whatever the wisdom (or otherwise) of the purchase, my question is "when will the patch be available in a stable release?" Thanks, Teknon.
I just received my 2nd iPod - this time a black Classic - and used it with Amarok and the current scripts from blackdot to get it running. It is the perfect device to have always access to my collection of over 500 CDs.
All I wish now is a stable release available in Kubuntu.
wow 500CDs, I got 342
The free iPod software PoddoX (www.poddox.com) supports now iPod nano third generation and iPod classic.
Seems that application is Windows only with future plans to support Mac formated iPods.
I've also got a Cowon A2 that I love, but it is just to heavy to lug around running and is only 30gig, the iPod Classic 160gig feels much lighter, but I HATE using iTunes and having to convert every damn thing for use on the iPod (I use most of the space for home work, my own Divix/avi ripped movies, and other misc stuff).
people of planet earth !!!
please stop using apple !!! There are plenty of alternatives for flash based devices and HDD players market is also growing fast. Just for comparision. If wanna see the current largest capacity portable A/V player (needs bigger pockets) take a look at www.hdmp4.com/ Device has REMOVABLE 2.5" IDE PATA DISK (those are up to 320GB now), which runs linux natively (but GPL violated i think) you can try this nice and 'small' bigscreen A/V media player, reletively low cost Starting from $347 without disk. What a toy. I hope they will release full GPL sources and toolchain. to discover new posibilities of this device...
I can only say this, READ :
