hello, may i have contextview please?

hey everyone, my name is leo franchi. quick intro: i'm 19 (as of today!), to go Tufts University, and am working on Amarok for my SoC 2007 project.

my project involves web service integration to Amarok 2.0: that means new contextual info from the web, think concerts, last.fm friend stuff, etc. as most of you know, amarok 2.0 will feature a new context browser, now called the contextview and based on QGraphicsView. as we leave KHTML as our technology of choice, we are left with a dilemma: customization. with KHTML it was very easy for the end-user (or modder) to customize the contextbrowser. using CSS, everything could be controlled.

but KHTML was one of the main reasons we left the old CB for the new QGV, and so the question of styling returns. the text inside the items on the context view is potentially styleable (but with much messyness) but the style of the physical QGraphicsItem (QGraphicsRectItem) not so much in this case. so i ask you, the users, for input: how much customization do you need? comments are appreciated as we decide how to implement what could be one of the centrally visible parts of the new amarok 2.0 interface.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by customization, but All i'd want to be able to do is switch between context choices. AKA, be able to click on the wikipedia article on the band, see their last.fm page, etc. I'd want to be able to control where i go from within the contextview, not have to fudge the code to do so.

I do not need much customization in the context view. It's just my music player after all, If I wanted a great browsing experience I'd use firefox.

The only customization that would seem interesting is widgetizing the context views so that you could put in the context view only the things that interest you.

Other than that, styling and whatnot does not seem important

At least colors should be customisable - and everything else as much as possible. We (I really mean *WE*) could do one basic style (or maybe some to choose from) but still give user the possibility to make a theme all his own.

I think, if you have given users a feature, you never should take it away if it's really liked. And modifying the CB IS liked. And as it's the essential part of Amarok, we should make every effort to get it as good (and user-configurable) as possible. We are building apps mostly for the users, not only for ourselves.

Of course selecting which content to show is also important; with the current system CSS can only hide some parts of it, but it still has to be created.

Honestly, I've never changed it from the default. Guess that shows how much I care to customize it.

Well ... but Amarok looks nice in black http://www.winboard.org/forum/vbimghost.php?do=displayimg&imgid=126 doesn't it (it's selfcreated - but only changed the colours of KDE)?

But know my desktop is default ... I got lazy ;P

For the users who couldn't care less, there's the default styles, just like always before. But for the users who want it to look unique or anything else one could want, we should have the option to customize.
