The problem with background programs is that you can't see or even control them.
Alternative solutions I have in mind are - if those backstage icons would shine through other applications and come in front after interaction (mouse gesture or key) - applications glue themselves minimised on the side of the screen and use only very little space. If you move your mouse over one, it expands a little. Then you can control or maximise it. Cheers. Keep up your excellent work.
Windows 3.1 also minimized apps to icons on the desktop as well, actually
How about something like MacOSX's Dashboard? or sidebar or something
I agree, that is an absolutely brilliant idea!
Imagine if your desktop had small, unobtrusive and partially animated (or not, *your choice*) icons such as amarok, a kontact calendar, rss news etc that all registered with plasma... bye bye superkaramba! my 2c
As Peter already mentioned, one of the problems of desktop widgets are there accessibility, I for instance use almost every application in maximized mode, even kicker main panel is set to hide "immediately". Therefore I use the menubar (which is set in MacOS-Style) to enclose the traybar as in this picture

Since 16:10-TFTs are becoming more popular these wouldn't cost that much productive space anyway. so long, Tobias |
