Friday, October 27. 2006thesis due soon!I’ve been a little busy the last couple of weeks since returning from San Francisco because of the impending deadline for my thesis. The word count has nearly hit 15,000 - a pretty good effort if you ask me. Once Tuesday comes and goes, I’ll be a much happier man. My thesis has been based on application work for the bionic eye project at my university, which is really cool and exciting, particularly since Qt 4.2 is my development platform! I consider my thesis to be my testbed and experience for upcoming Qt4 development. The new QGraphicsView architecture is wonderful to work with, and I also just started a conceptual Amarok context browser written with a QGraphicsView framework. Details coming soon when I have some more time! Saturday, October 21. 2006last.fm + concertsLast.fm is seriously cool. The coolest ever. At the beta site, there are two new features which are coming out in a couple of weeks time. taste-o-meter

Seriously cool. I’m imagining browsing my Amarok context browser and listening to RHCP and a little box is shown: “Hey, seb! the RHCP are playing in Sydney in April!” I think i’m in web 2.0 heaven. Friday, October 20. 2006Google Summer of Code Summit DayLast weekend I was privileged enough to visit San Francisco for a trip to the Google Headquarters in Mountain View. Google provided a summit day for SoC mentors from various organisations to attend and discuss aspects of the program. With over 100 mentors and admins from most of the involved organisation, it was great to meet such a variety of people from different backgrounds. I met Tobias from the xmms2 project, and it was interesting to discuss the different design decisions and architectures between amarok and xmms2. It was great, but we clearly know who is winning Over the day there were many good presentations, such as Brian and Ben’s Poisonous People Talk which I would recommend - dealing with the difficult. The “sticky” talk, where attendants were able to grill the SoC panel for all things bad and good was also eye opening. Some interesting points that came up:
Another high point of the summit was lunch, where we were served steak and had big long chats about all things technical and social. A group photo for the summit day (photo by David Anderson): Tuesday, October 17. 2006Sunday, October 15. 2006

Yesterday, Arab of Nectarine Radio fame interviewed me on the future of Amarok. Check out the interview for some interesting tidbits about current Amarok development, and our future plans regarding Amarok 2.
Sunday, October 15. 2006Monday, October 9. 2006San Francisco Looms! In about 4 hours my plane leaves for San Francisco! I’m going to a Google Summer of Code mentor summit day as the only KDE representative. As always, I’ve barely prepared myself; just finished packing and now I need to go to buy some travel insurance. If any students/mentors have anything they would like me to pass onto Google SoC admins, give me a shout! Friday, October 6. 2006Simple WordPress Captcha PluginI got fed up clearing out the moderation queue every day, so I adapted one of the botcheck plugins for WordPress to be much simpler in terms of code size, because that was a fun project, and I had time to spare. It asks, “Are you a spam-bot?”, and the user has to type ‘no’. I think this is both amusing and capable, although very easy to bypass, but I’d be interested to see if any bot authors bother. The volume slider is up to $1841 after only a few days. Thanks to everyone who has contributed! The Google Code Search has just gone live. And like any new search engine, the first thing you do is go ahead and search for yourself. Whats neat about the source code search engine is that actually your name is a good way to trace where code has gone, since it appears in the copyright statement. Some discoveries:
