 Please enjoy an overview of current Amarok development. Things are moving at a crazy fast speed currently, and Amarok 2.4 is going to rock hard, I can promise you that. Here is what we did last week: We launched our annual Roktober fundraiserEach donor who agrees will have a “Thank you” entry in the Amarok “about” dialog, optionally with social networking features provided by openDesktop.org for those who have an account! Rick's mega patch, fixing most Applet issuesAmarok developer Rick W. Chen committed a mega patch, consisting of no less than 110 separate commits! What he did is simple to describe, but hard to do: He fixed almost all bugs and various issues in Amarok’s Plasma applets (those applets in the middle part of Amarok). Additionally, he made many small improvements to the applets, such as: The main features (the main motivation for context view changes for me) were supporting Wikipedia locales and upcoming events for specific venues. MusicBrainz auto-tagging from SergeyThis is a killer feature, as far as I am concerned. Like most developers, I am very, very lazy. To be honest, I have not tagged an album in my life. This feature changes all that. You click one button, and everything you want is tagged correctly. This is awesome.  MusicBrainz tagging in action New option for hiding the menu barThis has been a much requested feature for a long time. And since we care about usability a lot, Amarok is going to explain to you how to disable this feature before you activate it. Font size of On-Screen-Display is now configurableThe user can now control the font size of the text in the OSD. Rather than setting the absolute point size, as was the case in Amarok 1.4, the user can specify the size in a relative percent-of-normal size. For example, setting the size to 115% makes the OSD font a bit larger than the normal screen font. Why the change from absolute to relative sizes? It lets Amarok look better on a wide range of devices, from small mobile or netbook screens, to HTPCs. Playdar Collection by Andy Coder (GSoC project)Amarok will now render this menu readable with all color schemesBugs and WishesOver all, we closed 98 bugs and implemented 6 wishes: 29 were bugfixes, 3 downstream bugs, 4 upstream bugs and 62 were marked as duplicate. As a Chilean, I'm glad to see you playing that on Amarok! They REALLY LOVE Chile (the drummer has a Chilean girlfriend, their DVD was recorded here... there are a lot of stories between The Gathering and Chilean fans).
BTW, thanks for the comeback of MusicBrainz. Amarok 2.4 should have real feature-parity with Amarok 1.4.
yes it should, including ipod syncing!
i am still following the news altough i am not using anymore amarok until it supports syncing again..
Yeah, but there's another feature that is almost shameful to remember. In Amarok 1.4, you can customize the background color and the text color of the OSD display. In Amarok 2.x we lost the ability to customize the background color of the OSD: it's always grey.
We know about the issues with both the iPod and the MTP features, and we're working on replacing both systems with something more reliable and more functional.
Many thanks for the comeback of MusicBrainz! To me it was the second most important feature of amarok 1.4.
Right after this post I had to upgrade to amarok-git, seems stable and UI improvements make Amarok look truly beatiful. MusicBrainz is also amazing. Now Amarok seems to have all features that I need.
Just wondering, is there any plans to add Nepomuk tagging support and possibly to start using Nepomuk indexing in the future?
Yes, we have experimented with Nepomuk. In fact we even have an experimental "Nepomuk Collection".
So we might support it in a future release, but probably in addition to our normal scanning system, not by replacing it.
I don't see spectrum analyzer, transcoding and UPnP in 2.4 Changelog. They will be added in 2.5, right?
Uhm, you realize that 2.4 is not yet finished, right? Of course not every feature is already included at this point.
Wow very nice to get that wonderfull Ctrl+M feature what should be in KDELibs so it would be on every KDE application!
Amarok2 just became a netbook and user friendlier! Now for my wishlist is that Amarok2 would support music albums correctly in the database that you do not need to invent own non-existing album names to organize the music collections.

Important question - Does this tag the actual file or merely add a tag to the database entry? It really must be the former, because I shift systems fairly regularly and simply cannot be bothered to go around re-tagging music entries every time, nor too do i feel like its my job to learn how to export database dumps jsut so they can be exported back into the next system.
