What is Kraut Sourcing? No worries, I will explain this later on. First I would like to ask our community for a favor:
The Amarok team is about to release Amarok 2.3 fairly soon (our release schedule is tight), perhaps in about three weeks from now. What I am asking our community (especially artists) for: Creating a new splash screen for this release This is how the current splash (kindly made by Lee Olson) for Amarok 2.2.x looks like: ![]() As Amarok 2.3 is the start of a new major series, we would love to have a new splash screen. Any takers? The winner will be chosen by the Amarok team, and the reward is: 1 Amarok t-shirt, a mention in the "Thanks To" dialog of Amarok, and... hmm, a beer at our next meeting. Does this sound ok? PS: "Kraut Sourcing" is pretty much what just happened here: A German asking for Crowd Sourcing. Update: Please note that the license must be Creative Commons, cc-by-sa Trackbacks

3 weeks or so max (like stated above).
Ideally: Sooner
That last lot were brilliant matey.Especially the middle dark blue top one or the lighter one.
i designed a splash screen already . you can see this from this link:
http://imagebin.ca/view/PG-eggO.html also i will design another in this weekend if i win in this competition you can contact me with my email address :p
This looks great
One question: About the image in the background (rocking people): Did you make it yourself, or did you take it from an existing photo of others? That's because: We have to be very strict about the licensing. Only CC-something (Creative Commons) is possible, and we cannot use any commercial content.
these shapes are from devianart web site . these are from one of my friends and they have cc lisence
dont worry about this
Even if CC licensed, (which CC license is it specifically?) we likely still need to properly attribute the source materials. So we need a bit more info than that!
i didnt find that picture .she removed that form her gallery , i emailed her for adding that picture in her gallery again....
Not that I can create one, but could the splash screen's "source code" (=GIMP/Inkscape file with all layers intact) please also be posted online?
It would be easier then to make tweaks to match a distro's branding.
The Amarok splash screen is not something that should be distro-branded.
Hi there!
I made one, hope you like it! http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/2392/amarokp.png I just used Gimp for that. I took the photo from http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1151/955244322_0ef88a523f_o.jpg It was marked as "free to contribute"! Greetings, David
I made an upgrade to my work:

So, my last version:

Here is my submission.

I can make you one. Although I would like to know where I can find the stock for the amarok text used in the splash.
What's the preferred size?
Can we use transparency (1 bit like gif? 8 bit like png?) I'd also like to know where the standard icon / text can be found in .svg format, too. Thanks for a great app!
Transparency: Not really, no.
Size: Same as the one from 2.2 that you can see in the article.
Here's the svg:

And this is what i've got to offer:

Lots of good submissions already, here's another

The background looks a bit blurry, don't you think
Hey, this is what I performed. I didn't follow current size though, I'm sorry - it was designed in some haste, but I can correct the aspect of course. Well anyways, here it is:

OK I made another two
http://img269.imageshack.us/i/amaroksplash2.png/ http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/9587/amaroksplash3.png What do you think?
Background looks nice, but somehow our logo doesn't really fit in
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/6769/amaroksplash23.png
Yet another submission. Sorry for the top lines sharpness. To be fixed soon.
The rock concert photo is CC-BY-SA and this splash is made completely in KDE's own Krita!

Hey Mark,
I just wanted to check that you noticed my entry. Any feedback?
Hi,
I made splash screen too: http://i.imagehost.org/0490/amarok.png It still needs some updates but i think you understand my concept.
I like the background, but somehow the logo doesn't harmonize very well with it, IMHO.
Agree, maybe you will like this more?

Dear Amarok developers,
whatever new splash screen you elect, please keep in mind that people don't enjoy only rock or other modern music you dance to with Amarok. I mostly listen to operas, but I wouldn't wanta Amarok to have a splash screen showing Lauritz Melchior doing the "Wälse" call (though it would be awesome So, please consider more abstract images without dancing people, too. Or an image of two layers: A corporate design one (eg. a frame and the Amarok logo) and a customizable background (where you could put in your favorite picture eg. of a concert)?
Sorry, but that sounds very weird to me. See, I listen to: Techno, Rock, Pop, Classical, Electronica, Prog Rock... and more.
The image is just meant to convey one thing: "PARTY TIME!!" And that fits in very well with out spirit. We want Amarok to be exciting and fun to use, our slogan is "Rediscover Your Music" for a reason
> The image is just meant to convey one thing: "PARTY TIME!!"
Surely, and that's what I'm talking about: I'm listening to music all the day, if I were just to party to music, I would break down very quickly. I can understand that eg. notes don't look cool and shiny, but they fit to everything, while party people don't. But I see, I'm a bit too pedantic.
"But I see, I'm a bit too pedantic."
^ That

This is amazing. This IS discovering music. This is... my new wallpaper.
I love the way all the current musical elements extenuate how Amarok is in the forefront of music playing
another submission.
hope I'm not too late http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/4038/amaroksplashdarkeladmiz.png
Personally, I like digikam's splash screens. The last few releases, they have a nice SVG overlay, and simply put a new different behind it, and possibly tweak the SVG blending colours.
See http://www.digikam.org/drupal/node/493 If you had a really nicely done SVG overlay, then for each release you could have a range of photos, such as: Classical: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8363028@N08/3568130923/ Ethnical: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dalbera/3103666444/ RockBand: http://www.flickr.com/photos/_fabio/3752676995/ (photos found at random searching flickr "Creative Commons-licensed content requiring attribution" Using the search term, "concert") etc. So that for each release those that like Classical but not raves each get to have a splash screen release that suite them. And then rather a new re-design for every release, it's simply a matter of choosing the best photo. A quick copish of digikam's is at http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/8066/testjn.png but I think this is pretty ugly myself, (not the best picture, or SVG setup :S Pierre |
