Sunday, February 7. 2010Amarok on Windows - Getting there :)
A friendly user has today created a screenshot of the latest Amarok from Git Master. I was rather surprised that it actually looks fairly decent on Windows (had expected worse things), and the user even said it also works pretty well, with the new Phonon-VLC backend.
Anyway, I wanted to share this with you, but please keep in mind: This is a preview of the next Amarok version. Some things (like the new toolbar) are not yet fully finished, so please don't complain about that. Trackbacks

I have a question about the phonon-vlc backend. When will it be available for linux users (e.g. kubuntu) do you have any idea?
whenever it is ready (TM).
I use it in on linux (ArchLinux, to be exact), but it has some rough edges.
With Mac, the main problem is:
Lack of contributors. We would really love to produce a good Mac version, and it's basically almost ready. But the KDE-Mac team is rather small, and it's difficult to get it packaged, and tested, etc. Any help is more than welcome (A good starting point is #kde-mac on irc.freenode.net)
I'd love to help but I don't have a Mac computer. I can use Hackintosh but it's too unstabled for production since I have an AMD box.
I'm slightly confused. Does this mean that this version of Windows will run without the use of the KDE on Windows or does Amarok still depend on it (and for that matter, will Amarok for Windows always need KDE on Windows)?
This topic is often misunderstood. Let me try to explain:
What KDE applications need on Windows (and everywhere else) is Qt and KDElibs. Those are libraries, just like any other library that applications use (modern applications typically use many libraries). So, in short: Amarok does not need "KDE". It runs natively on Windows.
What about kdebase-runtime? I always hear from KDE developers that running KDE apps with no kdebase-runtime is broken and unsupported.
Runtime is needed, but there isn't much in there. What's in it:
Icons, config dialogs, some KIO stuff. (And I suppose it's kinda modular, the Windows packagers probably remove unneeded things from it)
Ahhh! OK then. So when version 2.3 of Amarok on Windows comes out, it will run natively on Windows? I think that's what I got from it... if that's the case, then YEAH!!!!!
Uhm. Yes, but... you are missing one important detail:
Amarok 2.x has been native all the time (it's fully cross-platform). There is no difference, really. Only that we are now getting closer to polishing all the little details that make it work really well, on Windows
I, too, am waiting with baited breath for Amarok on Windows. I run dual-boot (Vista/Ubuntu) and have been using Amarok on the Linux side for a while now. I'm getting really tired of all of Windows Media Player's quirks (extremely long startup time, for one), Songbird still isn't ready for prime time, and I've never really trusted WinAmp. I wish I had the development skills to help make this happen even faster.
Where will be .exe fila available? On winodws.kde.org installer there is no .exe file
Please, I really hate my job W$ computer, make it to suck less, make Amarok to work well, pleaSE!!
Hi there, well i just have a question
How to i can make to work the "VLC-Phonon" under Amarok 2.2-GIT for Windows KDE 4.3.3 ? In this site : http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Download:Windows#Post_installation Say "install a VLC 1.1 nightly build if you didn't use the vlc installer: add the VLC installation directory to your path, as described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310519 Now, after selecting the VLC backend in the Phonon settings (to be found in Amarok at Settings -> Configure Amarok -> Playback) you should be able to rediscover your music. :)" But dont explain which "varible" the and what value of this "value" Can be "VLC-BackEnd" & "vlc.exe" ? and ready ? , i dont believe. Well thanks for read me
Exactly the same problem I ran into. Installed KDE + Amarok + VLC 1.1 on Windows 7, and now trying to find out which variable and value to add.
Songs won't play Too bad they don't have full instructions for Windowz... |
